A Photo Session with Cousins and Grandparents at The Arboretum | Oyster Bay Family Photographer

I had a blast photographing this family last year in West Hampton. During that session, my client announced to the rest of her family that she was pregnant and expecting her second child. It was so fun to capture their reaction to the happy news. It was so great to hear that they wanted to do another shoot and this time include the newest member of the family.

The family is from Oyster Bay, so they decided that they wanted to shoot at The Planting Fields Arboretum, a place at which they spend a lot of time. This location is not only gorgeous, but holds meaning to them as well., so it was the perfect spot for their family session, which would include all of the siblings, grandparents and grandchildren.

The grandchildren are all toddler aged and under four years old. This meant I had to work quickly with them and I also had to be able to pivot my shooting agenda based on their needs. Even though I head into these extended family sessions armed with a list of client requested poses, I often have to adjust based on the kids’ needs and give them breaks as needed.

Most people who schedule a multi generational session tend to have a lot of requests for traditional and posed images, which I will sneak in between playful and more candid captures. This tends to keep the kids happy and engaged. Often it is during those candid moments that I can quickly snap the posed image request.

This location has an abundance of scenic locations that can serve as the perfect backdrop. Although there is a gorgeous pool and mansion on site, my approach to family photography really lends itself more to the natural fauna and foliage. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was so much still in bloom. I love the pop of colors that the florals bring to the images.

As always, my favorite images are those of the parents hugging and playing with their children. These images always tug at my heartstrings. I think this gallery really captures the personality of the children and the one between the entire family.   This family really is very special. They have such a tight bond and are so loving to one another; it is quite touching. Additionally, the grandparents love for each other is so evident and they are the ultimate embodiment of marriage goals.

Here a few of my favorites from his fun session.
