A Multi Generational Family Session on the Beach

Although we have plenty of photos taken of our own children and family, most people do not have updated family photos that includes their extended family members. In fact, most of us only have the rigid posed photos that were taken at the last family wedding. As your dynamic changes, it is important to get photos taken that show the unique bond that exists within your extended family.

What I love the most about these large group photo sessions is that no two sessions are alike. Each and every family has a unique relationship and their love shines through in different ways. These sessions truly are energetic, fast paced and tons of fun.

This recent multigenerational portrait session was a blast. Two of the sisters are former newborn clients of mine and I met their mother at both of their in home newborn sessions. When they contacted me in the winter about gifting a session to their mother for the holidays, I was thrilled because I knew this photo session would be a special one.

There are five sisters and three of the sisters have children. In total there are six grandchildren, four of which are under 4 years old. You might be thinking that this session was destined for chaos, but it was the exact opposite of that. It was super fun and the children were so cooperative, despite the fact that the session started well after bedtime. The kids absolutely crushed it during the session and I don’t think that any tears were shed at all.

In order for the photo session to run smoothly, it is important that I know the family’s goals for their photos. Each and every family is unique. Some want very specific groupings, some want more traditional images, and others are looking for completely organic images. This family session was centered on the beautiful matriarch of the family. She is not only stunning, but the coolest grandma I have ever met. We focused a lot on capturing the siblings together both with and without the parents. I also wanted to leave some room at the end of the session for some more relaxed images in the ocean.

I just loved working with this breathtakingly beautiful family. Here are some of my favorites from the evening.
