What type of Newborn Session is Right for You? | Nassau County Baby Photography
Having a baby is perhaps the most important milestone in life. This experience is special in so many ways. While planning for the arrival of her new child, most new moms have tons of decisions to make, one of which is choosing the best newborn photographer for your family. This decision is an important one because your photos of your newborn child will forever preserve this precious moment in your life. There are many photographers and session types from which you can choose, but it can be difficult to decide which is best for you and your family. The following tips can help you to make that decision.
1. Style
Each photographer has a unique style. It is best to look though the photographer’s website and review portfolios. Looking at a wide array of websites is particularly helpful if you are not exactly sure what style you are drawn to. Some photographers specialize in posed newborn sessions with lots of props and outfits while others are more lifestyle driven and the focus of the session is on capturing interaction with the baby. You also want to make note of the style….are you more drawn to light and airy images or those that are moodier and darker? Once you find a photographer whose aesthetic is aligned with your own vision, you should reach out to that photographer and inquire about a session.
2. Location and Timing of the Session
Some moms prefer that the session take place in the comfort of their own home, while other prefer the polished and streamline look of a studio setting. For many photographers, the timing of a session will vary based on the location. For example, if you are looking for the posed newborn sessions then the photographer will usually do the session during the first 7-10 days; whereas,, most in home sessions are scheduled anywhere between 10-21 days after the birth of baby.
3. Advance Booking
Many newborn photographers limit the amount of sessions they book each month. This is to ensure that there is time in the schedule to accommodate your due date. For that reason, it is best to book your session while you are still pregnant. Once your baby is born, the specific date of your session will be determined. Booking the session ahead of time is also helpful because once baby arrives, you will be busy. Checking this off your to do list ahead of time allows you more time to relax once baby is here.
4. Family, Siblings and Pets
Some clients wish to include extended family members and pets in their session. You will want to check with your photographer to see if it is best to schedule your session in the studio or in your own home. If having these members of your family included in the photos is a priority, you will want to choose a photographer who can accommodate those requests.
5. Get to Know Your Photographer
One of the most important steps in a newborn session is getting to know your photographer prior to the session. This help you to feel comfortable with your choice in a photographer and at ease on the day of the session. You should choose a photographer who is willing to provide a pre session consultation. This meeting, which is typically done via phone, or FaceTime, is to help you to get to know your photographer and allows you an opportunity to ask all of the lingering questions you may have. It is also a time when the photographer can help you to finalize your wardrobe choices and can help the photographer to customize your session based on your goals. If you are doing an in home session, it will also help the photographer to get an idea of what the lighting is in your house. Accom;ishing these goals prior to he session ensures for beautiful captures that will last a lifetime.
