Why You Should Wear Earth Tones for Your Next Beach Photo Session
So, you finally booked that beach family session with Long Island’s favorite family photographer. Now, it is time for the toughest part of having a family portraits captured and that is figuring out what you should wear! I am here to tell you that it does not have to be difficult. I try my best to make this part of the session as easy and stress free for you as possible.
Once you have booked a session with me, you will receive my custom wardrobe guide. This guide will help give you an idea of what to wear. In my guide, I go over all of the colors that I recommend. The colors I suggest are based on the location and my editing style. I am also available to my clients every step of the way to plan their wardrobe. This incudes sending a custom wardrobe board, hand curated links or even to just serve as a sounding board and offer input on outfits.
A big misconcepetion about beach sessions is that you should go with a very beachy/tropical color palette. This is a big no for beach family sessions. Those overly saturated colors will cast color on your skin and look jarring against the soft and tranquil beach setting. Another popular choice is to go with soft dusty pinks and blues. While you can’t go wrong with that color palette and it looks amazing with both my editing style and at the beach, there is an often overlooked palette that is amazing at the beach. That is the classic earthtoned palette. Colors like warm browns, sage greens, creams, tans and rust all look amazing at the beach. People don’t often think about going with this color scheme, but it really is amazing if done right. This means you want to stay on the warmer side of these colors.

Family Photos With Earth Tone Color Scheme
I recently photographed this family on the beach. My client went with a beautiful color palette of warm brown, sage, tan and cream. This color scheme looks amazing with a golden sunset, but it is equally as amazing on overcast evenings such as this night. It looks great against the sand, green of the dunes and greys of the jetty. Simply put…if you are not into this color scheme and have yet to wear it for a family photo session, try it out. My client found everything on Amazon. All of the dresses were really high quality and as you can see, photographed beautifully. So, don’t forget to try Amazon.

Recent Family Photo Session With Earth Tone Colors at the Beach
This family was beyond sweet. Even though it was the first time meeting them, I felt like I knew them for ages. The sisters, ages 4 and 2, were a delight. We had to adjust the start time due to some impending thunderstorms, but we made ti though the session ad just as we finsihed up, the lighting and rain rolled in. In fact, you can see some lightning in the background of the last few photos. The sight of lightning was my cue to wrap the session up and take shelter. As soon as we got in our cars, it came down. If you have booked a beach session in the Summer, you have to be flexible and be willing to adjust the start time to accomodate the weather. This Summer in particular has been quite stormy at sunset.
Here are a few of my favorites from the day.
