Ethereal and Whimsical 16th Birthday Photo Session | Sweet 16 and Senior Photographer
A 16th birthday is a significant milestone in a young lady’s life. It signifies the transition into adulthood and it coincides with those last two years in high school, during which time your child is preparing for the next chapter in life. All of these changes make this moment the perfect opportunity to capture updated photos of your daughter. For many people, the only professional portraits they have of their children at this stage of life are school portraits. However, do those photos truly capture the essence of your child? A sixteenth birthday is an opportunity to capture your daughter and her maturing personality and do so in a way that is authentic and natural.
I work with my clients to customize their teen portrait session. After booking, I send out a questionnaire that helps me to get to know my client, her style, and her goals for the session. This helps me to suggest wardrobe, choose a location and customize the session to meet her needs.
This recent sixteenth birthday portrait session, was a delight to capture. My client wanted ethereal and natural portraits to commemorate her birthday. She was dressed in an exquisite pale sage green dress that was a subtle nod to a fairy princess, yet part indie rock girl at the same time. She paired the look with classic Converse high top chuck’s, which imprinted her unique personality on her wardrobe. Within minutes of meeting this theater major, I could tell that she is destined for great things in life. She has an old Hollywood glamour and beauty paired with a wonderful sense of humor and intelligence.
It was quite chilly and rainy on the night of this session. I was thankful that the rain dissipated as soon as we started to shoot, which created a lovely cloudy sky that provided perfect soft lighting for the wooded photo session. We ventured down to the lake for a few photos and once we arrived, I was elated that the sun made an appearance through the shrouded sky. I am a sucker for some good golden light paired with water, so I asked my free spirited client how she felt about stepping into the shallow part of the lake for a few photos. She loved the idea and enthisiastically ventured into the lake. I am so happy that she did because those photos are my favorite from the evening.
