Reasons to Schedule your Newborn Session in the Studio
I often get asked whether the studio or home is the best place to schedule a newborn session. I have blogged about the in home sessions, but today I am going to discuss the studio session and for whom this session is best suited.
You Want a Brighter and Airer Look for the Photos
My studio has plenty of natural light and is designed to create a brighter look for newborn images. I rely mostly on natural light, but I do also incorporate some studio lighting for a portion of the session. Many homes in which I have photographed are very bright and airy, but not every home is. I do love a moodier edit and I find that photographing in homes allows me to capture those moodier images. I can get really creative with the natural light in each home. I always enjoy how every home is a new and blank slate and will allow me to capture unique photos. However, I do have some clients prefer a brighter look, so the studio would be the best option for those clients. If you are uncertain about which style you prefer, you can always contact me and send me images of your house and I will give you my input.
You Want a More Stylized Look for the Images
My studio is very stylized. I have incorporated bedding, home accessories and accents that are all designed to make your images look interesting. It is a beautiful space that is really conducive to stunning newborn photos. I am always scouring vendors like Anthropologie, Home Goods, Target and other stores for unique accents to add to the studio that will keep it fresh and modern. In fact, I recently renovated the studio and I am in love with the new look. Whereas some people prefer their home as the backdrop for their first photos with their baby, you may want your images to have this highly stylized and editorial look. I still capture you in a relaxed manner, but using a gorgeous space as the backdrop.
You Want to Get Out of the House for a Bit
Those first few weeks with a newborn are so special, but they do make it difficult to leave the house, which can feel monotonous. Heading to a studio for family newborn photos is the perfect reason to get out for a bit. It is so nice to get dressed up a little and have a change of scenery for a few hours. It can be completely refreshing. I know how hard it is to get out of the house with a newborn in tow, so I always set the start time of my loosely and give clients a window during which she they should plan to arrive. This alleviates some of the stress of getting out the door in a panic.
You Aren’t Looking for a Storytelling Gallery of Images
My in home newborn sessions tend to be large galleries because I shoot in a wide variety of rooms and spaces. For example, I shoot in the master bedroom, nursery, playroom, living room and sometimes even the kitchen or yard. I am capturing a lot of in between moments as well and my goal is to show the story of those first moments home with a baby in a very elevated and stylized way. It allows for a gallery of images that have an intimate and personal look and feel to them.
Although I am still capturing moments in my studio and use various setups, it will not be done in a storytelling way because the studio is not your personal home. I capture connection and love in the studio and for some clients, that is all they want captured. It is all a matter of personal preference.
Are you Unsure which Newborn Session is Best for You?
Some clients are not sure which type of session they want to book with me. Sometimes, they just book a session and decide which type they want to proceed with once the baby is born. Other times they contact me and we discuss options and I help them to choose a session that best suits their needs. There have often been times when a client thinks they want an in home session, but then the baby arrives and they decide to go with a studio session. It is all flexible and varies with each individual client.
