Tips for Cloudy Beach Photo Sessions | Jacksonville & St. Augustine Family Photographer
Most families who book a beach photo session hope for a glowing sunset and clear skies. While sunset at the beach can be beautiful, you don’t actually need direct sun to create meaningful images. In fact, I often prefer having clouds in the sky.
Soft cloud cover acts like a natural diffuser, filtering the sunlight and creating gentle, flattering light for photos.
Along the beaches of Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville Beach, and St. Augustine, cloudy evenings can add depth, color, and mood to your images in a way that perfectly clear skies sometimes cannot.
Your Wardrobe Matters
Whenever clients book a session with me, I send a wardrobe guide with tips on how to dress. I’m always happy to review outfit ideas and help you build a color palette that works well with the beach environment.
On cloudy evenings, wardrobe becomes especially important because color helps bring energy and contrast to the scene. Very light tones like tan, ivory, or white can blend too closely with the sand and sky when the light is soft.
Instead, I usually recommend incorporating at least one richer tone or textured piece — such as coral, soft blue, sage, or warm earth tones — to add visual interest and balance.
For example, my recent client originally had a color palette that included white and off white. When she sent her outfit options, I recommended that she pull in some color and she did a last minute shift to a rich coral dress. It was the perfect choice to balance out her daughter and husband’s neutral tones.
Alternate Location
I have several preferred beach locations throughout Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville Beach, and St. Augustine. On cloudy evenings, I may occasionally suggest a different location than originally planned.
If the sky is completely overcast, I often choose beaches that have more visual interest — such as dunes, grasses, jetties, or textured shoreline — so the images feel layered rather than flat.
Trusting this adjustment allows us to make the most of the conditions and create images with depth and movement.
Start Time
Cloudy skies can affect the timing of your session slightly. When the sun is fully hidden behind clouds, we often lose light more quickly once the sun drops below the horizon.
Because of this, I sometimes adjust the start time slightly so we can make the most of the available light. Occasionally this decision is made the day of the session once the weather conditions are clearer.
Flexibility
Beach weather has its own rhythm and can change quickly along the Northeast Florida coast.
It’s very common for forecasts to shift throughout the day, especially during the summer months when afternoon storms can move through quickly and leave beautiful skies behind.
I monitor the radar carefully during the week leading up to your session and again throughout the day. In most cases we simply wait to see how the evening develops before making any decisions about rescheduling.
Sunrise Can Be a Beautiful Backup Option
While most beach sessions take place at sunset, sunrise can sometimes be an excellent alternative if the forecast becomes uncertain.
Along the coast in Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville Beach, and St. Augustine, weather systems often move through overnight. A forecast that calls for rain in the evening may clear into calm skies the following morning.
Sunrise sessions offer incredibly soft light, quiet beaches, and a peaceful atmosphere that can be perfect for families with young children.
If weather becomes unpredictable, we can always talk through whether shifting to the following morning might be the best option.
Recent Cloudy Evening Family Session
This recent family beach session took place along the Ponte Vedra coastline on an evening when the forecast initially called for thunderstorms.was such a pleasure to photograph. It took place on an evening when the weather initially called for thunderstorms, but then the radar and report showed clear skies for the rest of the day from noon on. On the way to the session, the weather took a turn and dark ominous clouds appeared. In fact, at one one point it was raining, but fortunately it stopped right when my clients arrived. We weren’t quite sure what would happen, but decided to go for it. The sky was an array of colors that evening. There were dark ominous clouds to the west and north, but the south and east showed blue skies. The sunset made a very brief appearance at the end. I absolutely love the moodiness of these images and my clients gorgeous dress. Here are a few of my favorites.
